5 Things To Do To Prevent Excessive Disturbances With iMessage
5 Things To Do To Prevent Excessive Disturbances With iMessage
1. Mute iMessage On Your iPhone or iPad
No matter what exactly your reasoning is, you can mute notifications to your device by following these steps:
- Open iMessage
- Swipe left on a conversation that you wish to mute (this can be an individual conversation or group message)
- Tap on “Hide Alerts” and you’ve successfully silenced a conversation. You can tell it has worked if a half moon icon shows up next the conversation in iMessage.
This process actually works for both iMessage and normal SMS conversations on these Apple devices. Unmuting conversations works the same, simply swipe left on an open conversation and choose to “Show Alerts” instead.
2. Turning Off Notifications On Mac Version of iMessage
To turn off notifications to your Mac computer, you can achieve this in 3 simple steps:
- Click on the “? ” menu
- Choose “System Preferences” and then “Notifications”
- Choose “iMessage” and deselect “Play Sound For Notifications”
If you want to get the notification tones again, simply follow the same steps, and at step #3, choose to turn on “Play Sound For Notifications”.

3. Blocking Someone Through iMessage
As was mentioned earlier, you might have found significant good cause to block a contact altogether. This is easy to do by following these 3 steps:
- Open Messages and tap the conversation with the person you wish to block
- In the top right corner, tap the “Info” button. Then tap on the name of the contact.
- Towards the bottom you will see an option to “Block This Caller”. Simply tap this option yet again to officially reject and correspondence with the problematic contact.
Once this process is complete, you will no longer receive messages, calls or attempts to Facetime. If you happen to change your mind about blocking the number later, simply follow the same steps yet again, only selecting Unblock This Caller.
4. Reporting Junk/Spam To Apple
When you are getting junk or spam messages on a regular basis, you can send this data along to Apple. Underneath the message, you will see an option called “Report Junk”. Clicking on this sends the message and stats to Apple representative.
Reporting SMS and MMS spam messages should be done by contacting your carrier. https://vsfvon.weebly.com/blog/simcity-app-store-mac.

Filtering Out Unwanted Messages
You might not also know about the ability to filter messages from unknown senders from ever reaching your threads. In order to accomplish this, simply go into “Settings” and then click on “Messages”. From here you can choose to turn on the option “Filter Unknown Senders”. There will be a new tab that forms (called Unknown Senders) in your messages, but you will not be notified about new arrivals to this area. This setting extends to the messaging functions of your Mac as well.

5. Employ “Do Not Disturb Mode”
You might find that you do not need a permanent solution to limit notifications and only want to silence them for a set period of time. This is where the “Do Not Disturb” feature comes in handy. While this is active, you will not get notifications from any messages while your screen is locked.
You will see a half moon appear in your status bar across the top to indicate when this mode is active. Turning it on (or off) can happen in two ways: Mac app keyboard layout keyboard.
- Go to the Settings menu. Tap on “Do Not Disturb” or “Schedule” (if you want to set notifications for certain times)
- Or open up the Control Center by swiping upwards on the home screen and simply tap on the half moon icon you see.

If you are still struggling with these steps, or have more questions about how to do it, feel free to comment below so someone here can reach out and help you.
Hi,
I have my iMac hooked up to an external audio interface via Firewire. Most of the time while I'm working, I listen to an internet radio station, which I have open in a separate browser window hidden behind the main browser window. If I need to quickly mute the sound – for instance, when I get a phone call – this is not always easy: I have to switch to the browser, then switch to the relevant browser window, then click on the 'stop' or 'mute' buttons on the internet radio player. I used to use a third party radio player app (Snowtape) with a customisable keyboard shortcut to mute and unmute the sound, but I had to stop using it; for some reason, it would no longer play nice with my favourite radio station once I upgraded to Lion.
So, my question: is there any way of setting up a system-wide keyboard shortcut that will toggle sound on and off?
Thanks,
Rob
